NHL Rumors: Notable Trade Reports on Road to 2017 Draft

A week after the Pittsburgh Penguins finished off the 2016-17 NHL season by winning their second consecutive Stanley Cup, it's full speed ahead for the 2017-18 season.
The Vegas Knights will be joining the league as its 31st team, and their selections in the expansion draft will be announced Wednesday at the league's annual Award Show.
The NHL rookie draft is coming after that, and so is the NHL's free-agent season.
In addition to those events, teams will also be able to upgrade their team through the trade route. However, all trades that don't involve the Knights are on hold until the expansion team's moves are announced Wednesday.
The Montreal Canadiens acquired Jonathan Drouin in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday and also traded Nathan Beaulieu to the Buffalo Sabres, and general manager Marc Bergevin could remain busy.
The Canadiens are in contract talks with center Alex Galchenyuk, but the greater likelihood is that he will be traded.
NHL insider Darren Dreger tweeted that the Habs' many needs make Galchenyuk a trade target.
Galchenyuk scored 17 goals and 27 assists last season, and six of his goals were game winners. However, the 23-year-old had a minus-five rating, and he does not have the defensive game that is likely to satisfy head coach Claude Julien.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are involved in trade talks concerning forward James van Riemsdyk. According to a tweet from Howard Berger, a Toronto-based radio reporter and a Maple Leaf insider, the Leafs are talking to a number of teams about Van Riemsdyk's services.
Van Riemsdyk scored 29 goals and 33 assists last year, and he has scored 27 or more goals in three of the past four seasons. The 6'3", 210-pound New Jersey native had a minus-two rating last year, and head coach Mike Babcock clearly wants two-way players. Van Riemsdyk has often struggled on the defensive side of the ice.

Ottawa Senators defenseman Dion Phaneuf is on the trade front as the offseason hits full steam, and the 32-year-old is likely to be moved to his fourth team after earlier stints with the Calgary Flames and Maple Leafs.
The Detroit Red Wings appear to have a strong interest in Phaneuf, according to Dreger. The Canadian scored nine goals and 21 assists last season, but his minus-six rating indicates an inconsistency that could cause future problems for head coach Guy Boucher.
